Warren Buffett Talk at University of Florida
This is a talk that WB did at UF. He talks about his investment philosophy and his philosophy about life in general. You will learn a lot and plus the guy is just flat out hilarious and so makes for a very interesting listen.

Thanks for sharing,

BTW, the talk was given on 10/15/1998. I found an interesting blog on value-investment, and particularly an amazing compilation of WEB

WOW!! that is an awesome compilation.....Thanks for posting the link. Tons of information on Buffett and also on Rakesh Jhunjhunwala (one of the most successfull value investors out of india). I had no idea the lecture was from 1998, infact I was studying at UF at that time and its a shame that i missed attending it in person.

I was watching the lecture by WEB and in there he says that some of the mistakes he made in his carreer were buying attractive securities in lousy bussinesses/Industries. My question is about a certain coal company that we are invested in. I will not name the company here since this is a general forum and not the members only section and i donot want to give away the name. I know that your investigation into the company shows that it is a cheap and therefore an attractive security but what do you think about the coal bussiness do you think its a lousy and sub-par industry to be in?

Thanks

Hi vik589,

I am not aware of Warren Buffett thinking of "coal industry" as lousy and sub-par industry. I know Buffett in the past talked about textile and airline industry as such.

Buffett said in the video that he is 85% Graham and 15% Fisher. My investment philosophy in the past has been pretty much 100% close to Graham.

In my opinion, coal industry is pretty stable and reasonably good industry for investment. We know 10 years from now, coal will continue to be major source of electricity, that won't change. That is actually not true for many tech stocks. We can not be sure that Dell will be there in 10 years, who knows what computer will look like in 10 years. But coal will there.

Coal business also has protection of location and transportation cost. For example, Canada has lots of coal, but generally we don't see large amount of coal shipping from Canada to USA because the cost of shipping from Canada to US is so high that it is much cheaper to buy from local coal mines. That is why coal is local business, and has protection of location and transportation cost. This is not true for textile industry because it is cheaper for the factory to produce cloth in China than in USA. Location is not a protection from competition in USA for textile industry.

In the past, coal stocks are not new for Graham followers. For example, I forgot the name, but I read that one of Graham's famous student and Buffett fellow classmate made a huge profit in coal stocks in 60's or 70's.

Blast sorry for the confusion....No WEB never said that coal was a lousy bussiness to be in. It was just something I was wondering about on my own and wanted to know what your views were on this issue. Thanks for your reply and the explanation. :)
