NTT
I spent a year in Japan. NTT is a household name.

Current Price: 21.72
Book value per share: 41.25

It seems like it's trading at a significant discount.

I would rather not rely on the book value of NTT. The reason is Japanese companies' structures are very complicated and it is hard to analyze in details. They often mutually hold each other.

I am not sure if Japan's AU/KDDI has ADR in the US market, but if it has, it would be a better performer in the long run than NTT.

In telecom sector, I like China Mobile the best as the RMB is on the long term up trend, thus the earning of China Mobile will rise even without any growth. Plus, it is getting more than 3M subscribers a month, with a market that 70% population still do not have a cell phone yet. One down side is that China Mobile might be upgrading the network to 3G and needs to invest a lot on that.

A newbie like me knows book value is not reliable to evaluate a stock. The only book I've read so far is Peter Lynch's "One Up On Wall Street". You can find why on page 207.

I don' t know anything about NTT. I just want to point out that you have to have a better reason to favor it than comparing the stock price and the book value

From purely anecdotal experience, and surveys of my students, I found that AU phones weren't as popular as NTT DoCoMo or Vodafone.

NTT DoCoMo is #1 in Japanese market and AU/KDDI is #2. Vodafone (soon to be Softbank) is #3. However, AU/KDDI's subscriber base growth is the strongest in the last year.
